ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fl. — The St. Lucie County sheriff has confirmed “multiple fatalities” in the area following a series of tornadoes that swept through on Wednesday. Sheriff Keith Pearson reported that several victims were found at the Spanish Lakes Country Club, although the exact number of fatalities remains unclear.

First responders are currently active at various locations, assessing damage and aiding victims. St. Lucie County spokesman Erick Gill stated that dozens of homes have suffered significant damage, with some homes facing catastrophic destruction. “We are working with the St. Lucie County Fire District, the National Guard, and first responders from surrounding counties to assist with search and rescue operations,” Gill explained.

In response to the crisis, officials have opened three shelters and are considering converting another school into a fourth shelter for those displaced by the tornadoes.

Hurricane Milton has triggered multiple tornadoes across the Treasure Coast and Palm Beach County, leading to widespread destruction. Governor Ron DeSantis reported that there have been 116 tornado warnings issued, with 19 confirmed touchdowns on Wednesday alone. Kevin Guthrie, director of Florida’s Division of Emergency Management, noted that around 125 homes have been destroyed statewide, primarily affecting mobile homes in senior communities.

Milton made landfall near Siesta Key just after 8:30 p.m., and its impact has been felt across Florida throughout the day. This is a developing story, and further updates will follow.
